Description
Back Story In 1497, Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama sailed from Lisbon with one mission: to find a direct sea route to India and break the Arab-Venetian monopoly over the spice trade. After months at sea, he reached Malindi on the East African coast, where the Sultan of Malindi a rival of Mombasa welcomed him and arranged for a skilled Gujarati pilot, believed by some to be Kanji Malam. Using monsoon winds and stellar navigation, this pilot guided da Gama safely across the Arabian Sea.Da Gama finally landed at Kappad near Calicut (Kozhikode), Kerala, on 20 May 1498. He was received by the Zamorin, the powerful ruler of Calicut. But the Portuguese gifts cheap cloth, hats, and trinkets were seen as underwhelming, especially when compared to the fine goods offered by Arab merchants. As a result, no strong trade alliance was formed. Da Gama left with only a small cargo of spices.Despite the harsh return journey, where over half his crew perished, the few spices he brought back to Lisbon in 1499 earned a profit 60 times the cost of the voyage. It was a turning point in history opening the door to European colonization and control over Indian trade routes for centuries to come.Disclaimer: This video is a creative dramatization based on verified historical events.
